New foreign-currency banking rules for Cuban businesses
Status: IN FORCE — IMPLEMENTATION DEVELOPING
- What changed
- New Cuban banking measures expand the possibilities for businesses and other authorized economic actors to operate accounts in foreign currency and make permitted international payments. The new framework is particularly relevant to private businesses involved in imports, international suppliers and foreign investment projects.
- Who it affects
- Private businesses · Importers · Foreign investors · International suppliers · Distribution companies
- What it means in practice
- Access to foreign currency and international payments is one of the most important practical requirements for Cuban businesses that need to purchase equipment, inventory, technology or services abroad. The new rules improve the legal framework for foreign-currency business accounts, permitted foreign-currency deposits, payments to foreign suppliers, import-related transactions and international business operations.
- CPS note
- For investment and business projects, banking structure and access to international payments should now be evaluated as part of the project setup from the beginning. International banking is not unrestricted: international payments remain subject to Cuban banking procedures, correspondent banking availability, international compliance requirements and applicable sanctions.
